After the wallowing that has gone on for the past week or so, the season gets back underway tonight against Villa, and it has to be said that it is the perfect opportunity to shut a few critics up with a good performance. Shorn of the Cardiff three through suspension, Clichy through yellow card accumulation, and the usual suspects through injury, a win tonight would prove the true depth of the squad, a depth that has been tested to the limit this season.
Wenger also yesterday launched at Domenech for the way he has treated Henry this season, which is true – Henry is regularly flown in partially fit, to play ninety minutes in a meaningless friendly, when all other players in the team play a maximum of one half. It has seemed almost spiteful at times, but unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about it. This outburst, accurate as it may be, doesn’t help the relationship between the pair, and may also give the press more ammunition in their attempt to call sour grapes.
All in all, there’s been too much negative feeling around recently, with the fallout from Cardiff, the cup exits, the criticism of the players, the manager, the style, the crowd, the youth system, the cleaners, the temperature of the pies, etc. What better time for one of those relaxed performances we see from time to time, where the opposition is cut apart by incisive play? Fingers crossed.
