Couldn't agree more; which is what Wenger spoke of when he talked of opening dangerous doors. When UEFA levied the charge they opened the appeals process to every mistake and dodgy decision; from incorrect throw-ins to broken legs.
Impossible to police, impossible to judge, impossible to sanction... nothing to do with whether a dive is a dive or an oscar performance; all about whether the law is enforceable.
I don't happen to think Eduardo dived, but that's irrelevant; point is it has to be the referee's decision, and his alone; once you start re-visiting decisions already given you open the floodgates to administrated anarchy; and not only that; I've supported England for over forty years and last night I found myself hoping he'd send Rooney off. It's devisive and just plain wrong!

Yes, you're right, he appealed for the penalty, but you're still missing the point of what I'm trying to say.

Players appeal for fouls that aren't ten times a match. It isn't nice, but we've never been up in arms about it before, it has always been down to the referee to judge. If a player actually throws himself to the ground and appeals, that is worse than appealing hopefully for something you know you are unlikely to get.

Technically, it is deceiving the referee if you claim that a throw in is yours, when it plainly isn't.

I just think there's a danger that we are allowing the defensiveness that we feel after the Eduardo punishment to cloud our judgement of everything else, and make us cry foul at incidents we barely turned an eye to before.

I don't want to get too heavily into semantics here, but most are missing the point. The Eduardo charge was deceiving the referee. The moment Rooney sat on the deck and held his arms out he attempted to deceive the referee. The moment he allowed the penalty to be taken and didn't advise the referee of his mistake he deceived the referee. Open and shut case; according to FIFA ; absolute offence.

Folks, it wasn't a dive - there was contact, both players were tugging at each other. There are much more clear cut examples of dives week in week out.

No, Rooney didn't help himself by appealing for a penalty, but it still wasn't a dive. It was a tangle.

Alan, I agree on the shirt pull - it is supposed to be a mandatory yellow card, after all, but referees seemed to have forgotten that.

Can no-one else see that the defender had a hand full of Rooney's shirt? Certainly none of the match analysists noticed this blatant fact. This is what the ref saw, so this is why he gave the penalty. Obviously he missed Ronney pulling a shirt even more, and then missed him lashing out. However, I don't have any sympathy with the Slovenian defender for conceeding the penalty, as he grabbed Rooney's shirt. Which is a foul. People do it all the time, but it should be a foul all the time (and a booking, because holding is cheating, far worse than a mistimed tackle). I do have sympathy for him for the ref missing the blatant kick that injured him and that should have been in the least a booking.

I know diving's the hot topic, but I feel shirt pulling is up there as a blight on the game. It is cheating. Every shirt pull should be punished by a free kick (and a booking). Sure, if every shirt pull in the penalty area was given there would be loads of penalties, but that's not an excuse not to give them. If they get given more, the pulling will stop. And if two people pull one anothers shirts (like last night), they are both fouling one another, and the ref should give a free kick to whoever had there shirt pulled first. Although probably not in the rule if he can't decide who did it first I would book them both and start the game with a competitive drop ball (remember them - the Macedonians clearly don't).

its all inthe english mentallity. i saw rooney tackle and almost break a defender's ankle yesterday and instead of a booking he earned a pen, at the world cup against portugal HE STAMPED AND DANCED ON CARVALHO'S GROIN, GOT SENT OFF FOR THAT, and you englishmen had a simple defence for that, RONALDO WINKED.thats the lamest and most annoying statement i have ever heard in football. up to now i know most of you still believe he was sent off "BECAUSE RONALDO WINKED". "AND MARTIN TAYLOR IS NOT THAT TYPE OF PLAYER. AND KEVIN DAVIES, NICKY BUTT, JOEY BARTON ARE PHYSICAL WHILE MASCHERANO IS A DIRTY PLAYER. AND EDUARDO who has had only one dive in his career is A CHEAT, WHILE GERRAD IS 'NOTORIOUSLY LIGHT ON HIS FEET' ......."
