And so ends another year, and another decade, if you believe that decades run from years 0-9 (an oddity given that there was no year zero).
As far as years go, it hasn’t been half bad. For all the lack of a trophy, we’ve reached two semi finals, outscored every other Premiership side, lost fewer games than anyone, and even started to play a more expansive game since the switch to 4-3-3. We end the year in an incredible position considering the injuries we’ve suffered.
It has also been a great year for transfers – we’ve signed Arshavin and Vermaelen for the same amount we sold Adebayor to City for. And Toure’s aging legs earned us another £15m.
As far as decades go, you would be hard pressed to find a better one. There are those who like to criticise, but for any old enough to remember what life was like in the days before HD, you have to admit that the Wenger years have been magical. The ‘noughties’ have brought numerous trophies, and of the course the unbeaten season of 2004. The fact that everyone has lost at least three times at the halfway point of this seasons suggests how incredible an achievement that was.
So for 2009, thanks to Song, thanks to Arshavin, thanks to Cesc, thanks to Van Persie. For the decade, thanks to Henry, Bergkamp, Ljungberg, Pires, Vieira and the much maligned Pascal Cygan, who always holds a special place in my heart.
More importantly, thanks to everyone who keeps coming back here, reading and commenting, and making it worth my time to keep writing. I really do appreciate all the feedback, so keep it coming.
2010 promises to be a great year. Happy New Year to all of you. May it bring everything you wish for.
